Donald L. Shearer

Donald L. Shearer, 83, of Elizabethtown, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 8, 2017 at home surrounded by his family. Born September 17, 1933 in Highspire, he was the son of the late Charles L., Sr., and Catherine Ann (Fink) Shearer. He was married 60 years to Rosemary Shearer also of Elizabethtown.

Donald earned a BS degree in Physical Ed., Health and Biology from Catawba College in Salisbury, NC, where he played football and won the 1960 Owen Illinois Award for Outstanding Offensive Lineman. He served in the US Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. Retiring in 1996, Mr. Shearer taught and coached football at Elizabethtown Area High School since 1971. He was named coach of the year for the Lancaster-Lebanon League in 1976, and coached the East-West game in Hershey. Donald was also inducted into Kappa Tau Kappa for outstanding teacher.  He also taught in South Carolina for 10 years, for a total of 33 years in education. A 32nd degree mason, he was a member of Abraham C. Treichler Lodge #682, F&AM and High Twelve #629. He was also a member of St. Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three children: Douglas L. Shearer and his wife Carrie of Dunkirk, MD; Donna M. Book and her husband Richard of Lancaster and Catherine L. Byers and her husband Thomas of Dover; six grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a sister Doris Jean Berrier and her husband Gordon of Elizabethtown.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at St. Luke’s Evangelical, 106 North Second Street, Bainbridge, PA 17502 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be from 10:00 until the time of service. A Masonic Service will be conducted by Abraham C. Treichler Lodge # 682, F&AM, Elizabethtown. Interment will be private.
